Boarding

Boarding

Our Boarding Program goes beyond a bedroom and meals. Rather, we are a youth development program focused on boarders’ self-improvement. We provide a safe, active, and inclusive living environment where students strengthen their life skills in order to succeed in school and mature into responsible global citizens. We believe that learning continues long-after class is over, and we strive to provide fun, engaging activities that build character and creativity.

Our program is…

Living Environment

The Boarding Program allows students from across the globe to become a part of a community of diversity. We make every effort to arrange students of different languages to share a dorm room to enhance cultural exchange. While the boarding community cannot replace a students’ own family, we serve as an extended family to students while they are living here. And like family, we are always looking after students’ well-being, monitoring physical, mental, and emotional health while providing activities to fortify these health aspects.

HALLS

Boys & girls live in halls on opposite sides of campus. Each hall has a lounge, kitchenette, bathrooms, showers, laundry, storage, and an office for private meetings & discussions.

ROOMS

Bedrooms have windows with views towards the waterfront or mountains. Room layouts accommodate 2 to 4 boarders. Each student has a bed, desk, & a wardrobe.

CAFETERIA

Healthy, multicultural, & delicious, there are always several entrees served at meal times, with a salad bar and snack in the evening. Open seating allows social interaction.

HOUSEKEEPING

Housekeepers clean bedding & sanitize common areas, bathrooms, & bedrooms to keep boarders safe & healthy. The dorm matron oversees housekeepers & inspects rooms for cleanliness.

OUTDOORS

Boarders have access to a soccer field, basketball courts, & a patio with a raised garden. Steps outside of the school is the Spirit Trail Walk / Run Path that runs from West Vancouver to Lonsdale Quay.

INDOORS

Boarders have access to two gymnasiums, heated pool, multimedia auditorium & an exercise room. All of the campus features hi-speed WI-FI internet access & is wheelchair accessible.

Life Skills

While students focus on academics during the day, evenings and weekends are when they develop their life skills. For students to be able to care for themselves, maintain healthy relationships, and make positive contributions to their community, life skills are vital. Expert-led workshops and resources on various topics, guidance and feedback from our advisors, and weekly Hall group discussions are open to all our students.

Two Paths

Having greater self-sufficiency is something Bodwell strives to instill upon each of its students. We help them do so by facilitating connections from within the Bodwell boarding community. As life skills are developed from within the community, students will have a choice after a period of time to pursue one of two distinct paths for their Bodwell student careers.

PATH A

Continue benefiting from the Boarding Community

Students can choose to stay in the Boarding Program for the entire duration of their Bodwell Career. However, they are expected to be active members of the boarding community. They must regularly join activities, follow boarding expectations, and make a strong effort to maintain and build upon their life skills development.

PATH B

Independence in Homestay through life skills

Students who have an exceptional life skills track record are eligible to live with a homestay family. Homestays give students an expanded set of responsibilities. Students who have shown the highest level of achievement are rewarded Life Skill Certification, our highest honor to mark a student’s self-improvement and self-sufficiency.

Leadership

Building leaders means having good role models to follow. Bodwell’s Youth Advisor team strives to be those role models for aspiring student leaders. Advisors are responsible adults with diverse professional backgrounds, many with experience living abroad. They can more easily empathize with our boarders’ feelings and perspectives, while providing the structure and companionship students need to grow into the next generation of leaders.

Our advisors are…

Build Character

Bodwell provides many opportunities for students to push the boundaries and expose themselves to unfamiliar places and interests. Activities like our wilderness camps, community volunteering, and sporting competitions along with on campus events and clubs give our students exposure to a range of diverse experiences. Trying and learning things in settings that go outside the boundaries of familiarity and expectation, students can gain a better appreciation for the things they do learn and become more empathetic and resilient, the foundation for becoming a good leader.

Activity Opportunities

Student Leadership

Through the example of our youth advisors, our students will be able to take what they’ve learned and experienced and apply it to opportunities for leadership. One of the best ways for students to strengthen life skills, build character, gain experience and contribute to the boarding community is to take on a formal leadership role. Student leaders who assume these roles play a major part in keeping our community fun, healthy and inclusive.

Student Parliament

Parliament members campaign for their positions in the school community to earn votes. Students voted in take on many responsibilities, from planning school events to meeting with school management on the student body’s behalf.

Duke of Edinburgh

An internationally recognized program that tests student participants leadership and resolve in areas of volunteer service, physical challenge, and development of special skills. This program can be used as credit towards graduation.

Community Jobs

Students can get involved in the community to gain credit towards graduation and a sense of duty and purpose. Several hours per week is required and can involve anything from planting trees to assisting school staff.
