Academics

Bodwell has high expectations and standards from which students are reviewed. While the rigorous curriculum will fully challenge students, Bodwell uses a flexible, balanced approach to teaching, allowing students to independently explore a topic of study or be guided through it. Students will be able to find their own unique style and pace for learning, while support is always available in the classroom, in study groups, and individual tutoring.

Semester Timeline

English Prep

We teach our students Academic English to ensure their success in postsecondary study and beyond. All new students are given a proficiency test to determine whether they need to begin their studies in the Academic English Preparation program before taking on our regular academic program. A student completes one level of AEP in a term or sometimes a half-term. With hard work, a student may complete AEP in less time with the help of an intensive July course.

Successful Transition

Academic language needs to be seamlessly integrated with academic content when learning. We use components of the academic curriculum in the AEP program to ensure a smooth transition forward. English learning is not limited to AEP but also within the entire secondary curriculum: sciences, mathematics, literature, social studies, applied skills and career-life. Teachers of physical education, art, music, etc. also use various opportunities to develop students’ conversational English. So when students pass through to our regular academic program, they are able to instantly contribute and engage in the curriculum.

Citizenship

Young people are growing up in challenging times. In the midst of all the uncertainty, Bodwell empowers students with the skills they need to survive and thrive in the world-to-come. At the heart of Bodwell’s educational environment is the concept of global citizenship and leadership. Bodwell students gain an understanding of:

By learning how to interact with different peoples, students learn to look at themselves through the eyes of another; they forge a unique global identity; and they build bridges to mutual understanding. Bodwell provides students with the following opportunities that enhance their sense of global awareness:

Citizenship Opportunities

VOLUNTEERING

Volunteering and service learning are elements running throughout the school’s programs. Students must complete 30 hours of work/volunteer experience in community organizations before graduation. Notably, for many years since 2007, a group of students has traveled to another country to provide aid and goodwill to a partner community. Through these activities, students acquire a positive drive for bettering the world, as well as valuable experience for entrance to a university.

Volunteer Partnerships

Contact citizenship@bodwell.edu if you are interested in volunteer opportunities with our partner organizations.

The Arts

Every student at Bodwell has the opportunity to explore and express their creativity through the venue of art, music, and drama. This opportunity is vital for developing a flexible, adaptable mind that can meet the challenges of today and the future. Students have the option to develop their skills in such areas as drawing, painting, sculpture, and digital media. If a student is musically inclined, they will have the opportunity to hone their skills as part of an instrumental ensemble. Or a student can study the theatric arts and participate in drama performances scheduled throughout the year.

Music
Music

Music is a part of life that Bodwell students try to explore and find inspiration from.  Whether it be the choir or band, or DJ club, students can experience diverse genres of music that expand the mind and lift the spirit.

Performance
Performance

Bodwell supports student actors and dancers with classes and clubs that strengthen their skills and their knowledge, be it a survey of acting techniques or finding inspiration from past performers.

See it.

Bodwell is a school full of art. It’s halls are lined with the creative output of students. Every term the entire school can participate in art shows where they can see current student work. The creativity of student artists inspire our own faculty and their classmates in their own projects.

Visual Arts Details
Sharing work

Our students are given opportunities throughout the term to showcase their work in art exhibitions that are open to the whole school community.

Mixed Media

Our student artists learn to create in various media, exploring their ideas and realizing them in a way that utilizes the mediums they use to the fullest.

Cultural Influences

Student artists are encouraged to seek out art traditions from around the world and locally, such as First Nations artwork, to inspire and inform their own work.

Hear it.

Music permeates the school in many ways. From band performances at special assemblies to school wide cultural events, music will always be an important part of school life. Bodwell’s music also travels where members of our ensemble band go abroad to share their talents.

Music Details
Cultural Music

Because our student body is so diverse, its natural that the school is alive with different music cultures and genres. The celebration of cultural holidays and accompanying music introduces students to a wide variety of music.

Ensemble Band

Our junior and senior bands have ample opportunity to perform throughout the year at school assemblies. For senior band members, travelling to perform for local and international audiences is common.

Music Clubs

A variety of music clubs meet after school to pursue a musical passion. From electronic music to rock music, students can find a great way to connect through a shared love of music.

Feel it.

All our students have ample opportunity to sing, dance, and act in many assemblies and special events we have throughout the year. In fact, students are encouraged to participate to improve their English skills and to gain more confidence.

Performance Details
Words in Action

Our students are given opportunities during some assemblies to recite original poetry or orate a speech. Some events like our Poetry Jams are popular and bring out many of our student wordsmiths.

Theatrical Performance

Our drama department usually puts on live drama performances once per term. This allows students to experience all aspects of theatre craft, from acting to stage lighting and sets.

Talent Assemblies

There are several talent assemblies per term that are open to the entire school community to share a talent. Whether it be singing or dancing, students and faculty alike get in on the action.
